Access, Placement and Skip Permits – Before You Book
Booking your skip online is quick and easy, but before you finalise your order, it’s important to check that your site is suitable for delivery and that you have the right permissions in place. Here’s everything you need to know.
Council Permits
Booking skip hire online is quick and straightforward. Before confirming your order, it’s important to check where your skip will be placed and whether a skip permit is required. We make the process simple and handle the paperwork for you.
If your skip needs to be placed on a public road, pavement or verge, a council skip permit is required. Permit costs vary by local authority and usually cover a 14-day period. When you book your skip with Rabbit, we apply for the permit on your behalf and show all costs and lead times clearly at checkout.
Most councils approve permits within 3–5 working days, although this can take longer during busy periods.
Skip Placement and Access Requirements for Skip Hire
Skips can be placed on private land, such as a driveway, garden or forecourt, or on a public road.
Placing a skip on private land is the easiest and most cost-effective option, as no permit is required. If you need road skip hire, simply select On the Road when booking and we’ll arrange the council permit for you.
To ensure safe delivery and collection, our skip lorries need enough space to access your site. Before booking, please check the following skip access requirements:
- For 2 and 4 yard skips a minimum access width of 2.3 metres
- For 6+ yard skips a minimum access width of 2.9 metres (around the width of a large van)
- Minimum height clearance of 4 metres
- A stable, level surface for the skip
- No low cables, tree branches or overhanging structures
- Clear access at the time of delivery and collection
If you’re unsure whether your property is suitable for skip placement, give us a call. Our experienced team will be happy to advise before you book.
Need a skip urgently?
If your site is located in tight urban areas, has restricted access, or you’re someone who needs a quick clear-out, our Wait & Load service is a great option for you!
Parking and Neighbour Considerations
If the skip is placed on a shared driveway or public road, please inform your neighbours prior to delivery.
You may need to reserve the space using cones or vehicles the night before.
Skips placed on roads may require lights or reflective markings for safety; Rabbit provides these where necessary to meet council regulations.
Weight, Filling and Safety
When filling your skip:
-
Do not fill above the top edge.
-
Distribute weight evenly.
-
Avoid heavy items in large skips (soil, concrete, rubble).
-
Keep waste below the rim for safe transport.
Overfilled skips cannot be collected for safety reasons and may incur an additional charge.
Permits for Trade or Construction Sites
If you’re a trade or commercial customer, we can set up long-term permits for recurring skips or roll-on roll-offs.

Skip Hire placement & access FAQ’s
Do I need a permit for skip hire?
You only need a skip permit if the skip will be placed on a public road, pavement or verge. If the skip is going on private land such as a driveway or garden, no permit is required.
Can you arrange a council skip permit for me?
Yes. When you book skip hire with Rabbit, we apply for the council permit on your behalf. All permit costs and lead times are clearly shown during checkout, so there are no surprises.
How long does a skip permit take to be approved?
Most councils approve skip permits within 3–5 working days. During busy periods, approval can take a little longer.
Can I put a skip on my driveway?
In most cases, yes. Driveways are one of the easiest places to put a skip and do not require a permit. You’ll just need enough access for the delivery vehicle and a stable, level surface for the skip.
What access is needed for skip delivery?
Our vehicles need clear access to safely deliver and collect your skip.
- For 2 and 4 yard skips a minimum access width of 2.3 metres
- For 6+ yard skips a minimum access width of 2.9 metres (around the width of a large van)
- A height clearance of 4 metres, and no low cables, branches or overhanging structures.
- Access must be clear at the time of delivery and collection.
What if I don’t have space on my property?
If you don’t have space on private land, your skip can usually be placed on the road outside your property with a council permit. Simply select the “On the Road” option when booking and we’ll handle the paperwork.
What is a Wait & Load skip service?
A Wait & Load service is where the skip lorry stays on site while you load the waste, then removes it straight away.
Not sure if a skip will fit?
If you’re unsure about access, placement or permits, give our team a call before booking. We’re happy to advise and help you choose the right option first time.
