POPS stands for Persistent Organic Pollutants – chemicals that were commonly used in the manufacture of some upholstered furniture and soft furnishings before 2019. These pollutants can be harmful to the environment if the materials are not handled properly.
POPS are found in: Sofas and armchairs, Cushions and padded chairs, Upholstered headboards, Office seating and similar soft furnishings
Because these items contain treated foam or textiles, they can’t go to general landfill or be mixed with standard waste. By law, POPS waste must be stored, transported and processed separately under strict environmental controls.
