What Are POPS and Why Do They Matter?
POPs stands for Persistent Organic Pollutants – chemicals that were commonly used in the manufacture of some upholstered furniture and soft furnishings before 2019. These pollutants can be harmful to the environment if the materials are not handled properly.
Where POPS Are Found
Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are found in:
- Sofas and armchairs
- Cushions and padded chairs
- Upholstered headboards
- Office seating and similar soft furnishings
Because these items contain treated foam or textiles, they can’t go to general landfill or be mixed with standard waste. By law, POPs waste must be stored, transported and processed separately under strict environmental controls.

How Rabbit Handles POPs:
At Rabbit, we follow all Environment Agency guidelines for POPs disposal. Upholstered waste is segregated on site, safely transported and destroyed at approved energy-recovery facilities that prevent any pollutants from entering the environment.
Why There’s an Additional Charge:
Extra handling, storage and treatment steps are required for POPs items, which is why you’ll see a small additional fee when booking your skip. This ensures the materials are disposed of legally, safely and sustainably.
Tip:
If you’re disposing of upholstered furniture, select the “Include POPs” option when booking your skip. Our team will ensure the correct disposal method is used.

What We Can and Cannot Accept
Accepted: general mixed waste, wood, metals, plastics, inert waste, green waste, cardboard and paper.
Not accepted without prior arrangement: POPs and plasterboard.
Not accepted: asbestos, oils, solvents, paint, gas cylinders, fridges/freezers and clinical waste.
